Sardinia, Italy – Cero Generation (Cero), a leading European specialist in solar energy development, production and storage, today held an inauguration ceremony for its two solar power projects in Bolotana, Province of Nuoro, inviting local officials and project partners to celebrate the success of the projects and the benefits they will bring to the local area.
The two renewable energy projects, known as Bolotana A and Bolotana B, are able to convert energy from the sun into electricity, reducing the need to use fossil fuels that produce harmful emissions and contribute to climate change.
With a combined capacity of 15MW, together the projects will generate enough clean, renewable electricity to power the equivalent of over 9,000 homes, leading to the avoidance of around 8,500 tonnes of CO2 per year. At the same time, Bolotana A and B will provide a cheaper source of energy than with traditional production, helping to bring down high energy costs currently faced by consumers.
Bolotana A, Cero’s first Italian solar power project to reach commercial operation, came online in October 2021, with Bolotana B following shortly behind it in February 2023. To mark the occasion, Cero invited members of the local community, including government officials and the Consorzio Industriale Provinciale di Nuoro, to come together to celebrate the two projects and the positive impact they will have on the area.
At the event, held at Zona Industriale Ottana – Bolotana, attendees were greeted with refreshments before being taken on a tour of the Bolotana B site. Afterwards, they gathered to hear a series of speeches from representatives from Consorzio Industriale Provinciale di Nuoro and the Commune di Bolotana, as well as from Achim Schlegel, Construction Director at Cero, on the company’s ambitious plans for expansion, as it seeks to accelerate the delivery of a net-zero future across Europe.
Cero’s project partners also attended the event, including Elmya, who led on the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) for the two projects, as well as Proteck Srl, who took on the role of works director and provided valuable local stakeholder management. The event gave the opportunity for all those involved in seeing the projects through to fruition to share in their success.
As well as generating clean power for the region, the Bolotana A and B projects resulted in the creation of around 15 jobs for local people during the construction phases, bolstering employment opportunities in the area, and the projects gave a new lease of life to a large area within Zona Industriale Ottana – Bolotana.
The two projects form part of Cero’s 1.6GW Italian pipeline of projects, and will support Italy in meeting its solar PV target of over 45GW of solar PV installed capacity by 2030.
Marta Martínez Queimadelos, CEO of Cero Generation, said: “We’re delighted to introduce our projects in Bolotana and be joined by the local community to celebrate the significant contribution they will both have in generating clean electricity for the area. As 2030 approaches, it marks an important step in Italy’s net zero transition, as significant investment in renewables is needed to reach the ambitious targets set out by the government. We’re proud of the part we’re playing in this journey, through Bolotana A and B and our wider Italian portfolio.”
